FBA SOUTH FLORIDA CHAPTER

COMMITTEE STRUCTURE

​

The Federal Bar Association South Florida Chapter has revised its committee structure for 2024–2025. This streamlined approach consolidates related committees and reflects our commitment to inclusivity, community engagement, and responsive programming. The following committees now govern the Chapter’s operations and initiatives.


Standing Committees


Law Students, Clerks, and Newly Admitted Lawyers

Formerly: Law Student Committee and Law Clerks & Young Lawyers Division
This committee serves as a bridge to the next generation of federal practitioners. It engages law students and recent graduates through events, mentorship, and collaboration with law school FBA chapters.

  • Chair: Christopher Yannuzzi

  • Vice Chair: John Thornton


Newsletter and Publications

Formerly: Publications, Newsletter, and Appellate Committees
This committee curates and produces the Chapter’s newsletter and written publications. It highlights recent events, legal commentary, and judicial profiles, with an eye toward engaging members through both print and digital platforms.

  • Chair: Zach Lipshultz

Social Media and IT

Formerly: IT & Social Media Committee
This committee maintains the Chapter’s digital presence, including website updates, email outreach, and social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. It ensures timely promotion of events and initiatives.

Events

Formerly: CLE, Installation & Judicial Reception, and Board Room Luncheon Committees
This committee plans and executes the Chapter’s signature events, including CLE programs, the annual installation gala, judicial receptions, and boardroom luncheons. It works closely with the judiciary and legal community to foster meaningful engagement.

Membership

The Membership Committee is central to the growth and sustainability of the Chapter. It encourages lawyers to join, renew, and actively participate in Chapter activities while promoting the value of FBA membership throughout the legal community.

Awards and Grants

The Awards & Grants Committee secures resources for the Chapter and ensures recognition of outstanding service. It also serves as a liaison to the National FBA, positioning our Chapter for national visibility and accolades.

American Heritage

Formerly: Diversity & Inclusion Committee and Women’s Initiative
This committee supports full and equal participation in the legal profession, regardless of background. It hosts programming to elevate diverse voices and promote gender equity, while striving to ensure inclusivity in all Chapter activities.

  • Chair: LaSelve Harrison

  • Vice Chair: Celeste Higgins


Civics

Formerly: Civics & Education Outreach Committee
This committee promotes civic literacy in local schools and the broader community. In collaboration with the judiciary and FBA National, it supports programs that increase understanding of the legal system and inspire future legal professionals.

  • Vice Chair: Carmen Cartaya

 

Government Relations

This committee advocates for the interests of the federal judiciary and legal system at the local and national level. It serves as a conduit between the Chapter and elected officials, helping to elevate the voice of our membership.

Special Committees

The following special-purpose committees address one-time projects or focused initiatives:

  • Cooke Scholarship Committee
    Members: Celeste Higgins, Christopher Yannuzzi, Hon. Robert Watson

  • Legal Services / Pro Bono Committee
    Supports the FBA’s public service mission and collaborates with the U.S. District Court and local legal aid organizations to promote access to justice.

    • Chair: John Thornton

  • Judicial Intern Academy Committee
    Members: Jason Sternberg, Ana Kauffman, Tal Aburos

  • Judge Dimitrouleas Courthouse Naming Committee
    Members: Alaina Fotiu-Wojtowicz, David Weinstein, Stephanie Turk, Liz Gaurkroger, Oliver Ruiz

  • Operations and Governance Committee
    Responsible for keeping the Chapter’s policies and operations manual up to date and ensuring compliance with internal governance.
    Members: Hon. Edward Sanchez, Brett Barfield
